Audience: Non-technical remote employees Platform: Windows & macOS Product: Cisco Secure Client 5.x

Introduction

This guide explains how to connect to your company's network securely from home or any remote location using Cisco Secure Client, a VPN (Virtual Private Network) application. After reading this guide, you will be able to:

This guide covers Windows and macOS computers. It does not cover mobile devices or the initial installation of Cisco Secure Client. If you have not yet installed the application, contact your IT department before continuing.

Key Terms, Simply Explained

VPN
A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a security tool that creates an encrypted connection between your computer and the corporate server. Think of it as a secure, private tunnel through the public internet. The connection allows remote access to company resources.
VPN Tunnel
A VPN tunnel is a protected channel that allows data to travel through the internet privately. Think of it as a sealed envelope traveling through a public postal system — anyone can see the envelope is moving, but no one can read what is inside.
Encryption
Encryption is the process of scrambling data so that only authorized parties can read it. Think of it as a lock on your data — only someone with the right key can open it.

Before You Connect

Credentials

You will use your username and password to connect to the company server. You get them from the IT team. Make sure you have them before proceeding.

Software check

Before continuing, make sure Cisco Secure Client is installed on your computer. The IT department is responsible for software installation and configuration.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Your organization might require MFA to verify your identity. This could mean receiving a code on your phone or using an authenticator app. Make sure your phone is available.

Connecting to the Corporate Network

The steps are identical on macOS and Windows, except for step 1.

  1. 1
Open the Cisco Secure Client application.
Windows: Start Menu → All Apps → Cisco folder → Cisco Secure Client.
macOS: Finder → Applications → Cisco folder → Cisco Secure Client.
⚠ macOS only: During initial operation, a prompt will appear asking to approve a system extension. Click Allow.
  2. 2
In the VPN field, enter the server address provided by your IT department.
  3. 3
    Click Connect.
  4. 4
Enter your username and password, then click OK.
  5. 5
If your organization requires MFA, approve the authentication request on your phone.
  6. 6
When connected, the Cisco Secure Client icon in your taskbar (Windows) or menu bar (macOS) changes to indicate an active connection.

Troubleshooting

"Unable to connect to server"
Cause The server address is incorrect. The application cannot find any server at that address.
Solution Contact your IT department for the correct address. A server address typically follows this format: vpn.company.com
"Authentication failed"
Cause Incorrect username or password, or both.
Solution
  1. Re-enter your credentials carefully.
  2. If the error persists, contact your IT department to reset your credentials.
"Access denied" after successful login
Cause Your account is assigned to the wrong group and does not have permission to access the requested resources.
Solution Contact your IT department to verify which group your account should be assigned to.
"No internet connection"
Cause Cisco Secure Client requires an active internet connection. Your connection may be off, too slow, or unstable.
Solution
  1. Open a web page. If it does not load, your internet connection is off or too slow.
  2. Check that Wi-Fi is turned on.
  3. If Wi-Fi is on, restart your router.
  4. If none of the above works, contact your internet service provider.
"Session timed out" or MFA request missed
Cause The MFA approval window expired. If you missed the push notification, the request was automatically declined.
Solution

Before connecting again, make sure:

  1. Your phone's notification volume is on.
  2. Do Not Disturb is turned off.
  3. The MFA app is open and ready.
